I turned 60 last week. In my mind, I am still 10 ft tall and bulletproof. NOT! 1. I still write letters 2. I have a home phone (no cell) 3. New research into addiction may provide an answer that has been mystifying and plaguing people in recovery as well as the entire recovery support community for decades. Even before the AMA and the WHO classified alcoholism as a disease and addiction in general as a disorder the reason people relapse, even after long periods of being sober, could only be speculative. The finding of a disease came as a great relief to those suffering from addiction. The stigma of ” No Morality or No Will-Power ” was removed. It took many years for that to sink in. Some people today will not accept what science has proven. The issue of relapse has had no such explanation. If you ask someone why they relapsed, chances are they do not have a clue as to why. They are as in the dark as the ones around them. This is especially the case with those who are chronic relapse’res. The only thing the recovery community could come up with was that they had stopped going to meetings, were not working a program or had failed to stay spiritually fit. Actually, that is true in most cases. Now, there may be another scientific element that can be added to the mix, one more tool the alcoholic/addict can put in his collection. It has always been known that it is the brain that is addicted and it will want it’s “fix” 24/7 – 365 for as long as it lives. The brain will stop at nothing on it’s quest. The brain is the master of deception. What was not known was how it got the job done.
